El Nino Shift May Cause Caribbean Hurricane Increase
(July 7) The weather is changing all over the world and new studies suggest that El Nino changes may lead to an increase in the number of Caribbean hurricanes.El Nino, storms caused by warming of the eastern Pacific Ocean, tends to reduce the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean by creating a wind shear that inhibits hurricane formation.
A new study published in the July 3rd edition of Science suggests that El Nino patterns are changing, thus hurricane patterns are also creating different effects. Climatologists who studied wind patterns and ocean temperatures concluded that ocean warming associated with El Nino is moving thousands of miles west, toward the center of the Pacific Ocean. Such a change could bring about more numerous and more powerful hurricanes. The cause of this change has yet to be confirmed - it may be part of a weather cycle or it could be an effect of global warming.
